Hot Siberian / Gerald A. Browne. - New York : Avon Books, 1989. - 423 strony ; 17 cm.
Diamonds are valued above all other gem stones, with or without reason. The world diamond market is carefully controlled and monitored by what is arguably the most successful and oldest cartel in the world. Question the cartel's decisions or offend them in any way and you will be punished in whatever way the cartel feels is appropriate to your transgression. Nikolai Borodin is a Russian gem trader, assigned by the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Trade to deal with The System through its office in England. He finds he likes the privileges and possibilities outside Russia. When he meets and becomes involved with a British divorcee with an unquenchable taste for the finer things in life he begins to actively seek a way to leave Russia for good. Then The System's enforcers target him as the source of "unauthorized" Russian diamonds flooding the market. Nikolai decides to try to find out how the diamonds are being smuggled out of Russia. As he investigates he becomes more and more convinced that both The System and the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Trade are corrupt and both have singled him out to take the fall. The ending is both surprising and satisfying.
